Strategy: KWL chart
Basics
Time: 15 minutes Room Arrangement: No changes necessary Materials required: KWL sheet (1 per student) Process Directions
1. Announce a new unit or topic to your students. 2. Pass out KWL papers to students (1 per student). 3. Ask students to fill out the first two columns. 4. Collect the papers and use the data to guide instruction. 5. At the end of instruction, pass the papers back to the students so they can fill out the last column. 6. Collect the papers again and use them to determine and/or show student learning. |

While studying a unit on sea life, the teacher may ask students to fill in this chart about what they already know about sea life, what they want to know about sea life, and then later, what they have learned about sea life.
