Parent Communication Plan
An important part of student success is collaboration and communication with parents/guardians.
The first part of communication with parents is the standard communication. There will be some communications that are not student-specific, but are general and given to each parent in the same way. These communications include the First Day of School Welcome Letter, Daily Assignment Books, Monthly Newsletter, and Field Trip Forms.
First Day of School Welcome Letter
This letter will include three pieces of information:
Daily Assignment Books
Each day, students will write down their assigned homework in their daily assignment books. I will check it off to make sure they copied their homework down correctly, and then their parents will be asked to sign it to indicate that they have seen it and are aware of the homework assigned.
Monthly Newsletter
Each month, I will send home a newsletter containing information about the topics we will be studying, the special events that are coming up, and any other information that is specific to that month.
An example of a newsletter layout is here and cited at the bottom of this page.
Field Trip Forms
Each time we prepare for a field trip, I will send home permission slips as well as interest forms, asking for parent volunteers to accompany us and act as a chaperone for the trip.
An example of a field trip form that my friend and I created is here.
Some communications will be individualized, meaning each parent receives information that is specific to his/her child. These communications include parent-teacher conferences and phone calls.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
I will aim to hold at least one student led parent-teacher conference per student per semester. In this conference, we will discuss the student's progress, and the student will note what he/she is doing exceptionally well at, and what he/she could improve upon. The student will also help to create an action plan to guide the student in achieving his/her goals.
Phone Calls
I will aim to call parents at least twice per semester, once towards the very beginning of the semester. These phone calls can be relatively short and are simply a way to 'touch base' with the parent and acknowledge his/her child. I will include several things the student has done that I have really appreciated, and possibly leave one note of encouragement for the parent and student.
First Day of School Welcome Letter
This letter will include three pieces of information:
- Who I am and how to contact me.
- Who the class is, what our 5 finger covenant is, and what the Nurtured Heart Approach is.
- An outline of the information we'll be learning this year.
Daily Assignment Books
